Spectral geometric optics

Move a prism, lens or mirror and watch separate wavelengths take different paths. This optical bench emphasizes intuition: exaggerated dispersion makes spectral transport, reflection, refraction and total internal reflection easy to follow one interaction at a time.

  1. λ

    Sample the spectrum

Represent a broad source with wavelength-labelled rays.

  2. n(λ)

    Bend the path

Wavelength-dependent refractive index changes each transmission direction.

  3. ↗

    Split the energy

Follow reflected and transmitted contributions through the optical bench.

  4. ▥

    Read the arrivals

See how geometry separates the spectrum at the sensor.

Color can change the path itself, providing an intuitive foundation for the larger spectral renderers.
